Jackfruit Could Save Millions From Starvation

Jackfruit has a look like durian, the ‘King of Fruits’ which has pungent aroma and makes it to be banned in many public areas such as hotel and airport. This fruit also can be a key to save millions from starvation. The largest tree-borne fruit in the world is jackfruit!

Jackfruit Could Save Millions From Starvation

The jackfruit is native to south and southeast Asia and it is slowly being known to the west and chinese markets. Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the entire world – its fruit and seeds are full of all the ingredients for proper nutrition.

The outer skin of jackfruit is green in colour and the flesh of the fruit is golden yellowish. The taste is sweet and yummy.

The Biologist Comment

Nyree Zerega is a plant biologist at the Chicago Botanic Garden who studied the genetic diversity of jackfruit trees in Bangladesh.

Zerega said:
“In Bangladesh, where jackfruit is the national fruit, it is often considered the second-most important crop after mangos.

And if you have space to grow something, you almost always have a jackfruit tree – due to both its valuable fruits and timber.”

It is very versatile. Besides the fruit, all parts of the tree can be a source of food or can be used for construction. The leaves from the  trees can be a source of food for  animals in warmer climates, especially goats.

The inner bark is a deep orange colour, which is used as a dye for robes in Asia and can be sold with a good quality of timber. The sap is very sticky and suitable to be used as a glue. (Source: Unilad)

One jackfruit tree can apparently grow up to 150 fruits over the course of the year, and this could help feed the millions of undernourished people. Each jackfruit can yield hundreds of seeds, which are a great source of vitamins themselves, as well as being a great source of protein and potassium.

Biotechnology Researcher Comment

Shyamala Reddy, a biotechnology researcher at the University of Agriculture Sciences in Bangalore, India, told The Guardian earlier this year:

“It’s a miracle. It can provide so many nutrients and calories – everything.

If you eat just 10 or 12 bulbs of this fruit, you don’t need food for another half a day.”

It is very massive, and single fruit can provide a meal for the whole family. When the fruit is ripe, it is soft and fruity, but when it is unripe, its texture is similar to a potato.

The Innovation

Some innovation could be made with jackfruits rather than eat it as a fruit. Chef_ngopan would suggest to cook jackfruits with sticky rice or curry. Why don’t you try and share the result with us?

The fruit can be curried, fried, chipped, or the seeds can be dried and ground into a flour. We, INAN Global Ventures Sdn Bhd use jackfruits as a halal and healthy fruit snack to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Besides, we want to reduce the waste of jackfruits. In India, around 75% of jackfruit is wasted, because the fruit goes bad within a few weeks of its harvest in the tropical conditions.
